Photo. J. Trembecki - Photography Exhibition

From 12 June to 31 August 2026 the Brama Grodzka - Teatr NN Centre showed a selection of Jan Trembecki’s photographs in its Galeria NN - a slice of the roughly 20,000-frame archive of a Lublin press photographer that his family gave to the Centre’s Iconography Workshop. The Iconography Workshop of the Brama Grodzka - Teatr NN Centre has prepared an exhibition of photographs by Jan Trembecki - one of the most important Lublin press photographers of the second half of the 20th century. The photographs on display show everyday Lublin of the 1960s: above all, its residents.

What to expect

The exhibition fits the documentary and historical photography strand characteristic of the Centre, part of Brama Grodzka’s ongoing work preserving the memory of pre-war Lublin.

After the show

The show is gone, but the material behind it stays online: the Centre’s Iconography Workshop runs the Jan Trembecki archive in its “Lublin. Fotografia” service, so the 1960s frames remain free to browse with no ticket and no closing date. It is the same archive the exhibition drew on, and the place to start if you are tracking a particular street or housing estate. The captions are Polish only.

What is on at the Centre now:

• U with Two Dots - Katarzyna Minasowicz at Dom Słów on displacement and learning to live in an unfamiliar city, told through post-war Wrocław; runs to 31 December 2026, and from 25 September it also spills outdoors into the Saxon Garden. This is the Centre’s main show at the moment.
• Mroszczak Typography Triennial: the award winners - prize-winning typographic work at the House of Words Gallery, free entry. It closes on 30 September 2026, so it is the one with the tightest deadline.

Lublin media covered the exhibition on its opening day. Polskie Radio Lublin (12 June 2026) quoted the curator, Patryk Pawłowski, who said the collection matters because it contains the frames that never cleared press censorship and show a poorer Lublin than the one the papers were allowed to print - report, in Polish .
