Libiąż Regional Museum

What to expect

If a map app or an old guidebook sent you to the Libiąż Regional Museum, save the stop: it has closed, and the building at ul. Bartosza Głowackiego 16 is for sale. The town’s sale notice of July 2026 describes it as the building of the “former Olga Cygankiewicz Regional Museum in Libiąż” (our translation). The local weekly Przełom was already calling the museum defunct in February 2025, and its old page on the Libiąż Culture Centre website no longer exists.

That leaves a better question for anyone travelling between Krakow and Oświęcim: what can you see instead? The nearest working museum on this site is the castle in Oświęcim, 10.7 km from Libiąż as the crow flies. It is the right pick if you wanted the story of this corner of Małopolska. If it was folk life that drew you here, go to the Ethnographic Museum in Krakow, where you can walk into reconstructed village rooms. Neither of them, nor the museum in Kęty, replaces the memorabilia of the Janina colliery.

What you miss is a small, volunteer-built museum of more than 550 objects in five rooms. Upstairs stood a farmhouse room from the first half of the 20th century, with butter churns, washboards and scythes. The basement held a coal-mining collection from the local Janina colliery: uniforms, medals, lamps. Outside stood seven beehives from nearby villages, the oldest dated 1937.

Where those objects are now, no written source says. A Przełom podcast of 4 February 2025 promises the answer in its trailer but not in text. The town set a third auction for 25 September 2026, after two earlier ones (November 2025 and April 2026) ended without a bidder paying the deposit.

Tips

• Skip the old address. The building is not open to visitors and needs renovation. The town opens it only to prospective buyers who arrange a viewing by phone with its property department.
• Ask the former operator. The Libiąż Culture Centre sits at ul. Górnicza 1. Its website says nothing about the collection, so if you need to trace an object, write to sekretariat@lck.libiaz.pl .
• Oświęcim Castle: mind the season. From June to September it opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00-18:00. From October to May it is closed on Saturdays and closes at 15:00 on Fridays. Tuesdays are free for individual visitors. Allow an hour.
• Two different museums in Oświęcim. The castle museum is run by the town and has nothing to do with the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial: different address, different ticket.
• Krakow for the beehives. The Ethnographic Museum shows a beehive carved as a giant bear on its first floor. It is closed on Mondays; the permanent exhibition is free on Tuesdays.
• Kęty: not on Monday or Saturday. The Kłosiński Museum is closed on both days and stays open latest on Thursdays, until 17:00. Sundays are free, but the museum announced Sunday closures until 27 September 2026.

Getting there

By car: straight-line distances from Libiąż are 10.7 km to Oświęcim Castle, 25.9 km to the museum in Kęty and 44.3 km to the Ethnographic Museum in Krakow. The castle has no car park of its own; there is a paid municipal lot opposite on ul. Zamkowa and a free one on the Soła riverside boulevards. In Krakow, all of Kazimierz is a paid parking zone and the museum has no parking.

By train: Libiąż station, on ul. Józefa Piłsudskiego, is served by trains on the Oświęcim - Trzebinia - Kraków Główny route, so both main alternatives are reachable without a car. The ticket office at the station is closed. From Oświęcim station the castle is about a 30-minute walk. In Krakow, trams 8, 10 and 13 stop at Plac Wolnica.

Nearby

For the regional story, from medieval finds on the castle hill to reconstructed pre-war town interiors, the closest replacement is the Oświęcim Castle Museum . For village rooms and folk craft on a much larger scale, the Ethnographic Museum in Krakow is worth an afternoon of its own. And if you liked the idea of a town museum built from residents’ gifts, the Kłosiński Museum in Kęty still runs on much the same model.

Background

The idea came from the local circle of the Women’s League after the Second World War. Its members collected the exhibits, later joined by the Society of Friends of Libiąż. Olga Cygankiewicz, who chaired the circle from 1987 to 1997, pushed hardest for the museum. It opened in 1992 and took her name in 1997.

In 1995 the town gave the museum a building on ul. Głowackiego, put up around 1950. In December 2022 the councillors voted to sell it, and a valuer put it at 434,509 PLN. The third auction was announced with a starting price of 550,000 PLN.
