What to expect

The Tatra Museum in Zakopane is one of Poland’s oldest and largest regional museums, and its main building at the lower end of Krupówki is a monument in its own right: a monumental structure in the Zakopane Style, based on sketches by Stanisław Witkiewicz with technical plans by Franciszek Mączyński, its origins dating to 1913.

The permanent exhibition holds around fourteen hundred objects and joins two worlds. The first is the ethnography of the Podhale highlands: embroidered bodices and colourful skirts, carved spoon racks, cheese moulds, bagpipes and the local gęśle fiddles, plus a wooden model of the famous Pod Jedlami villa. The second is Tatra nature: granites, limestones and quartzes alongside a marmot, a bear and a chamois in glass cases. Temporary shows add to this - currently “Underground - a world torn from darkness” and “Black-and-white madness. Tatras, modernism, photography”. This is a museum of the old school, display cases rather than touchscreens; its strength is the authenticity of the collection, not staging. Visiting in practice

The museum sells no tickets online and takes no reservations for individual visits - entry is first come, first served, which you may feel in the summer season. A ticket for the permanent and temporary exhibitions costs 34 PLN (reduced 17 PLN), the permanent exhibition alone 26/13 PLN; Thursdays are free for the permanent displays. An audio guide costs 5 PLN, and a weekly combined ticket to all open branches (including Willa Koliba, the Hasior Gallery and the Palace Museum) costs 69/34 PLN - good value on a longer stay. Guided tours must be arranged in advance by email. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Getting there

The main building stands at the lower, quieter end of Krupówki, Zakopane’s main promenade. From Krakow it is about two hours by car, by bus from the Kraków Główny station area, or by train; from Zakopane’s stations the museum is roughly a 15-minute walk. Treat it as part of a full-day trip - Zakopane is 100 km south of Krakow, and buses are frequent but fill up in season.

The Tatra Museum runs a dozen or so branches around Zakopane and the region - the best known is Willa Koliba, the first house ever built in the Zakopane Style. On the way back towards Krakow, consider Pieskowa Skała Castle in the Jura uplands or a descent into the Wieliczka Salt Mine.
