What to expect

If you are travelling with children and the weather holds, this is the easiest science afternoon in Krakow: no booking, no queue for timed slots, and nothing behind glass. The Garden of Experiences is an open-air park of more than 100 physics installations, spread over six hectares in the south-eastern corner of Park Lotników Polskich. It lies 4.3 km from the Main Market Square as the crow flies.

It belongs to the Museum of Engineering and Technology, whose own English pages call it the Experimental Garden. It only opens in the warm half of the year: the 2026 season ends on 11 October 2026. After that the gates stay shut until spring, and the museum sets the next season’s dates each year.

Every installation is meant to be used, not looked at. Visitors strike stone cymbals, play a pipe organ, sink a Cartesian diver, pedal a bicycle along a rope and look through a periscope. The showpiece is a six-metre rocket with two slides side by side, one straight and one curved as a cycloid, the curve of fastest descent. A race between siblings doubles as the experiment.

Each device carries a short instruction panel in Polish and English, so non-Polish speakers lose very little; a visitor on TripAdvisor confirmed the bilingual panels back in 2017.

Children from about 5 to 12 get the most out of it. A Polish family blog planned an hour or two here with a 7- and a 10-year-old and ended up staying the whole day. Teenagers will move faster, and adults without children should treat it as a pleasant park walk with curiosities rather than a museum. It holds no historic collection: for engines and trams, go to the parent museum’s depot in Kazimierz instead.

Tips

• Go before 11 October. That is the last day of the 2026 season. The garden reopened on 20 April this year; check the museum’s site for the 2027 start before planning a spring trip.
• Watch the autumn weekday closing. Since 1 September the garden closes at 17:00 on weekdays and 19:00 at weekends. Tickets are sold until 30 minutes before closing, and on weekdays the desk pauses from 13:15 to 13:30 and 15:15 to 15:30.
• No booking, but you can buy online. Individual visitors simply turn up. Tickets are also sold through the museum’s online shop at bilety.mit.krakow.pl; the museum does not say whether the desk takes cards, so the online route removes the question.
• Budget PLN 21 plus extras. Admission is PLN 21 (reduced PLN 17, preschool child PLN 14, family ticket PLN 60), and children under three enter free. The gyroscope or three runs on the sledge track cost PLN 7 more, the planetarium PLN 12 - each only on top of an admission ticket. A season ticket costs PLN 150 and pays for itself on the eighth visit.
• Phone ahead for the planetarium. A planetarium ticket is valid for one screening, seats are limited, and bookings go through +48 12 428 66 00 ext. 11. The museum does not publish which languages the films are in.
• Allow two hours at least. The museum’s own estimate is two hours; families often stay half a day. Food is sold on site, and the toilets are by the entrance next to the ticket desk.
• Leave the scooter at the gate. The rules ban bikes, scooters, rollerblades, skateboards and animals other than guide dogs. Children under 13 must be with an adult.
• Pushchairs are fine. A Polish family blog found the paths easy with a pushchair in 2023. There is no induction loop, and tours in Polish Sign Language need two weeks’ notice.

Getting there

Tram: lines 1, 14 and 22 stop at Ogród Doświadczeń. Cross the road towards Park Lotników and turn right; the entrance is about 30 metres along. TripAdvisor reviewers found the tram the easy option from the centre.

By car: the museum sends visitors to the car park of the M1 shopping centre across al. Pokoju, and recommends entering al. Pokoju 67 (the mall’s address) into a satnav rather than the garden’s own number 68. The garden’s website also has a walking route from the TAURON Arena Kraków car park.

Nearby

The Polish Aviation Museum is 1 km north as the crow flies, across al. Jana Pawła II, and turns a physics morning into a full day of flight. Mind the calendar: it is closed on Mondays, while the garden opens every day of the season.

For a rainy day or a winter trip, Cogiteon Małopolska Science Centre , 1.9 km north as the crow flies, is the indoor, year-round alternative. It is pricier at PLN 40 and aimed more at children over 10.

The parent Museum of Engineering and Technology in a historic Kazimierz tram depot covers the history of machines, which complements the garden rather than repeating it.

Background

The idea of a sensory science park came from Krakow’s cultural and environmental activists in the 1990s. The model was a sensory experience field in Nuremberg, which Polish sources call Pole Doświadczeń Zmysłowych. EU money from the EQUAL programme, through the “Nowa Huta - Nowa Szansa” project, and city funds made it possible from 2004. The garden was designed by the architecture firm Ingarden&Ewy, and its foundation act was laid on 20 November 2006.

The first 22 installations opened in June 2007 and more followed that September. The City Council named the garden after Stanisław Lem, the science-fiction writer born in Lviv in 1921 who died in Krakow in 2006. In April 2008 it became a branch of what is now the Museum of Engineering and Technology, and a 2021 EU-funded project added forty new installations.
