St Adalbert's Church Archaeological Reserve

What to expect

The tiny domed church standing at an odd angle in the corner of the Main Market Square, where Grodzka street enters it, is the oldest building on the square - older than the square itself, which was laid out around it in 1257. Tradition holds that St Adalbert preached on this spot before his mission to Prussia in 997, and the Romanesque stone church went up around the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries. Over the centuries the level of the square rose several steps above the church’s original floor, burying its oldest walls - and that buried level is exactly what you come to see.

The crypt beneath the church is run by the Archaeological Museum of Krakow as a small archaeological reserve, with an exhibition titled “Tuż obok biło serce miasta. Historia kościoła św. Wojciecha” (“The heart of the city beat right next door. The history of St Adalbert’s Church”), refreshed in a new arrangement since 29 August 2024 and telling the story of the church and its surroundings. Set your expectations accordingly: this is one of Krakow’s smallest museum sites, a short descent below the busiest square in Poland rather than a gallery circuit. The draw is standing among genuine Romanesque masonry a couple of metres under the pavement you crossed a minute earlier.

Visiting in practice

Timing is the whole game here. The exhibition is seasonal, open from May to October only; from November to April the reserve is closed, so a winter visit is off the table. Within the season it runs Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 17:00, with last entry 30 minutes before closing - and, unusually for Krakow, it is closed on Sundays, the exact opposite of the museum’s main building on Senacka street, which closes on Mondays instead. Tickets are cheap: 10 PLN standard, 6 PLN reduced, and on Tuesdays admission is free, matching the free Tuesday at the main building - a Tuesday walk lets you see both for nothing. A visit is short, so treat it as a fifteen-to-thirty-minute add-on while you are already on the square, not a destination in its own right. If you have time for only one underground site on the square and want a full-scale experience, pick the Rynek Underground; if you want quiet, original walls and a fraction of the crowd, this is the one.

Getting there

You could hardly ask for an easier address: the church stands in the south-east corner of the Main Market Square, at the mouth of Grodzka street, in the heart of the pedestrianised Old Town. Every walking route through the centre passes it. The nearest tram stops are Plac Wszystkich Świętych on Grodzka and Dworzec Główny on the north side of the Planty ring.

The natural pairing is the Rynek Underground beneath the same square - a large multimedia journey through medieval Krakow that makes a striking contrast with the bare Romanesque stone here. In the middle of the square, the Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art in the Cloth Hall fills the upper floor of the Sukiennice, and a five-minute walk along Grodzka and Senacka brings you to the parent Archaeological Museum of Krakow , home of the famous Zbruch Idol.
