What to expect

This is the Museum of Krakow’s branch devoted to harcerstwo, the Polish scouting movement - and a quick word of context helps here. Polish scouting, founded in 1910-1911 on Baden-Powell’s model, became far more than a youth pastime: its members fought in the wars for independence, and during the Second World War the underground “Szare Szeregi” (Grey Ranks) ran resistance operations, including in occupied Krakow. The permanent exhibition “The Paths of the Scouts” tells this century-long story through uniforms, scout crosses, banners, documents and personal memorabilia.

The setting is the second attraction. The museum occupies Fort Jugowice, also known as Fort Łapianka, one of the outer forts of the Austrian-era Kraków Fortress on the city’s southern edge. A separate permanent exhibition, “Jugowice Fort. Site Heritage”, covers the fort’s own architecture and its journey from military ring to scouting centre. Be realistic about the audience: if you grew up in scouting or care about resistance history, this is a rewarding and unusual stop; if neither theme speaks to you, the central branches of the Museum of Krakow will give you more per hour of travel. Captions and the ticket system are geared mainly to a Polish audience.

Visiting in practice

Plan around 90 minutes for both exhibitions. A standard ticket to one exhibition costs 20 PLN, reduced 15 PLN; a combined ticket for both is 26 PLN standard and 22 PLN reduced, with family tickets at 40 PLN for one exhibition or 52 PLN for both. On Sundays entry is free - collect a free ticket at bilety.muzeumkrakowa.pl or, subject to availability, at the desk on the day. Note the weekly rhythm, which differs from the free-Monday pattern of other branches: the museum opens Wednesday to Friday 10:00-17:00 and weekends 10:00-18:00, and is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Last entry is 60 minutes before closing for individual visitors and 75 minutes for groups. Announced closures: 1 and 11 November, and 24, 26 and 31 December.

Getting there

Honesty first: this is a trip out of the centre. The fort stands at ul. Forteczna 28 in the Kliny estate, Swoszowice district, roughly 8 km south of the Main Market Square - expect 30-40 minutes each way. Driving is the simplest option, and there is a car park at the branch; otherwise take a bus heading towards Kliny and Swoszowice in southern Krakow and allow a short walk from the stop. The green surroundings of the fort make an agreeable leg-stretch either side of the visit.

On the way back into town, right-bank Podgórze is the natural pairing: the Podgórze Museum covers the history of the once-independent town, the Eagle Pharmacy tells the story of the ghetto from Bohaterów Getta square, and Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory shows occupied Krakow - the very era in which the Grey Ranks scouts went underground.
