What to expect

The Podgórze Museum is a small branch of the Museum of Krakow, and the honest pitch is this: if you are walking the right bank anyway - Schindler’s Factory, the Ghetto Heroes Square, Krakus Mound - this is the one stop that explains the district itself. Podgórze was not always part of Krakow. In 1784 Emperor Joseph II granted the settlement the status of a free royal city, and for over a century it grew as Krakow’s ambitious industrial rival across the river before the two merged in 1915. The permanent exhibition, “In the Shadow of Krak’s Mound”, tells that story from the Austrian founding through the industrial boom to the darkest chapter, when the German occupiers placed the ghetto and the Płaszów camp on Podgórze’s territory.

The building has a biography of its own. Known traditionally as the inn Pod św. Benedyktem (the museum itself admits the inn attribution is uncertain), it belonged in the late eighteenth century to the merchant Józef Haller, later served as a military hospital and artillery workshops, and on 31 October 1918 its barracks were seized by Polish soldiers under Second Lieutenant Franciszek Pustelnik, making it one of the first liberated buildings on Polish soil. During the war it was a branch of the St Michael prison; a message written by prisoners in 1942 on cigarette-paper wrappers, found during renovation, is on display. Set an hour aside; captions are compact and the visit pairs naturally with a walk up Lasota Hill behind the museum.

Visiting in practice

Standard tickets cost 22 PLN, reduced 16 PLN, and on Thursdays entry to the permanent exhibition is free - which makes Thursday afternoon the obvious budget slot on a Podgórze walking day. Check the weekly rhythm before you go: the museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, opens 11:00 to 19:00 on Wednesdays and 10:00 to 17:00 from Thursday to Sunday, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Announced closures: 1 and 11 November, and 24, 25 and 31 December. This is a compact venue with no crowds to speak of, so no booking is needed; buy tickets at the door or through the Museum of Krakow online ticket service. A temporary exhibition on the Hotel Forum, Krakow’s famous brutalist hotel, runs alongside the permanent display.

Getting there

The museum stands at ul. Bolesława Limanowskiego 51, at the foot of Lasota Hill with the tiny St Benedict church, a few minutes east of Rynek Podgórski, the district’s main square. From the centre, take a tram across Powstańców Śląskich bridge to the stops around Limanowskiego street. On foot from Kazimierz, cross the Bernatek footbridge and walk through Rynek Podgórski - about twenty minutes, and the route itself previews much of what the exhibition covers.

Podgórze rewards a full half-day. Fifteen minutes away in Zabłocie, Schindler’s Factory tells the story of Krakow under occupation - book that one ahead, unlike this museum. On Ghetto Heroes Square, the Eagle Pharmacy preserves the pharmacy that operated inside the ghetto, and by the river Cricoteka , the centre devoted to Tadeusz Kantor, adds a contemporary-art counterpoint to the history trail.
