What to expect

First, the practical headline: the Nowa Huta Museum building - the former Światowid cinema at os. Centrum E 1 - is temporarily closed for a major renovation and extension, a project planned for 2024-2028. Until it reopens there is no permanent exhibition to walk into, so do not build a trip around the museum itself. Build it around the district instead. Nowa Huta was designed from scratch after 1949 as a model socialist city for the workers of the Lenin Steelworks, and its monumental axes, Renaissance-inspired housing blocks and vast central square are the real open-air exhibit. The museum, a branch of the Museum of Krakow, is the institution that interprets all of this, and even mid-renovation it keeps working: educational activities run at os. Szkolne 22, and its sub-branch Podziemna Nowa Huta (Underground Nowa Huta) shows the exhibition “Stan zagrożenia” in a Cold War shelter under a school at os. Szkolne 37.

The building you will find behind hoardings is worth a look from outside anyway. Światowid, designed by Andrzej Uniejewski, is a listed late Socialist Realist landmark and was Nowa Huta’s first panoramic cinema; it opened with a screening on 21 July 1957, ran films until 1992, and hides two air-raid shelters in its basement. After the works, the floor area will nearly triple and a new permanent exhibition about the district and everyday life under communism will open underground.

Visiting in practice

While the branch is closed, no opening hours or admission prices are published. What you can actually book is a guided experience: the official guide-service price list quotes 220 PLN for the shelter sub-branch at os. Szkolne 37, and 390 PLN each for a guided walk around Nowa Huta or a themed walk tracing the district’s shelter heritage - reasonable value split between a small group. Check the programme and book by phone (+48 12 446 78 21) or email before you come; the museum also runs open-air events, including the annual Zajrzyj do Huty festival (18-20 September 2026) and an outdoor exhibition opening on Aleja Róż on 10 September 2026. Allow about an hour for the shelter visit, more if you add a walking tour.

Getting there

Nowa Huta lies well east of the Old Town, but the connection is simple: trams run from the centre along al. Jana Pawła II to Plac Centralny, the district’s monumental central square, and the Światowid building stands just off it at os. Centrum E 1. Expect a ride of roughly half an hour from the Old Town. The os. Szkolne addresses used during the renovation are a walk of some fifteen minutes north of the square, past Aleja Róż, the district’s former parade avenue.

Nearby

The tram back towards the centre passes Czyżyny, where the Polish Aviation Museum occupies a historic airfield with one of Europe’s better aircraft collections, next door to the Cogiteon science centre - both easy add-ons to a Nowa Huta half-day. For the industrial side of the story told hands-on, the Museum of Engineering and Technology in a former tram depot in Kazimierz makes a good pairing.
