What to expect

Three permanent galleries on one ticket, fifteen minutes’ walk west of the Main Market Square. The Main Building is the headquarters of the National Museum in Krakow, and since 3 December 2025 it finally holds the full set: 20th- and 21st-century Polish art, decorative arts, and a new Gallery of European Art.
For a visitor with one free afternoon, the European gallery is the surprise. Just over 120 works span the 13th to the 20th century, hung in reverse: you start near the present and end at Spanish Romanesque madonnas. Lorenzo Lotto, Lucas Cranach the Younger, Pieter Bruegel the Younger and Elisabeth Vig茅e-Le Brun hang along the way, with sculpture by Antonio Canova and Gustav Vigeland.
The van Gogh is in that same gallery. “Country Cottages Among the Trees”, the only van Gogh in a Polish public collection, is on loan from the John Paul II Collection until 31 December 2026. It is billed as a temporary exhibition, but admission is included in the branch ticket - no separate purchase, no timed slot. Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum confirmed the attribution with the Krakow laboratory in 2021.
The Polish gallery fills the entire second floor: roughly 600 works in twelve rooms, covering 120 years in one continuous route. If Polish art is a blank to you, this is the fastest honest introduction available anywhere - Wyspia艅ski and Malczewski at the start, Witkacy and the interwar avant-garde in the middle, then Kantor, Nowosielski, Wr贸blewski and Opa艂ka.
The decorative-arts gallery is the quietest and the most demanding: textiles, goldwork, glass, ceramics, furniture, instruments and Judaica, with almost nothing interactive. Adults who read labels will enjoy it. Children will not.
Two honest warnings. This is not an old-masters museum - for those go to the Czartoryski Museum , and for the 19th century to the Sukiennice gallery on the market square. And the Arms and Uniforms gallery that older guidebooks and city portals still place here has moved to the MNK Arsenal branch.
Tips
- Allow two to three hours. The museum publishes no visit time. Three galleries on three levels genuinely take an afternoon; one gallery alone takes 60 to 90 minutes.
- Arrive by 15:30 at the latest. The museum admits visitors to the galleries no later than 30 minutes before closing, so 17:30 on an 18:00 day.
- Free Tuesday is also the busiest day. Free admission covers the permanent galleries. If you want the Polish gallery to yourself, pay the 45 PLN and come on a Wednesday morning.
- English on site. The audio guide runs in English, German, French, Russian and Polish and costs 7 PLN (5 PLN reduced). A guided tour in a foreign language is 270 PLN plus admission, so it only pays for a group.
- Pupils and students under 26 pay 1 PLN. A valid school or student ID gets them into the permanent galleries for 1 PLN. A family ticket is 90 PLN, reduced 35 PLN. Separately ticketed temporary shows are 35/25 PLN, but some, such as the “Oblicza Czapskiego” exhibition (until 31 January 2027), are included in the branch ticket; each exhibition page says which applies.
- Book at bilety.mnk.pl. Questions and group bookings go to rezerwacja@mnk.pl or +48 12 433 57 44. School groups can tie up the ticket desk for a quarter of an hour.
- Photography is allowed; leave large bags in the cloakroom. Cloakroom and lockers sit by the entrance, with a cafe and shop on the ground floor and a baby-changing table available.
- Step-free access. There is an external lift at the main entrance, plus internal lifts and stair platforms, and the museum offers audio description, a sign-language guide and a sensory basket.
Getting there
Tram: lines 1 and 20 stop at Muzeum Narodowe, directly outside the building. From the main railway station take tram 20, about a quarter of an hour.
Bus: the same stop is served by more than a dozen lines, among them 124, 152, 164, 169, 179 and 424.
On foot: fifteen minutes from the Main Market Square along Franciszka艅ska and Pi艂sudskiego, crossing the Aleje Trzech Wieszcz贸w ring road at the end. From Wawel it is a similar walk through the Planty park.
By car: a paid underground municipal car park with disabled bays sits at the entrance, and two more parking areas lie on the B艂onia meadow.
Nearby
Five minutes down Krupnicza is the J贸zef Mehoffer House , where the artist whose paintings you just saw upstairs actually lived - house, furniture and garden intact. Further along aleja Krasi艅skiego, the Stained Glass Museum is the working workshop where the Mehoffer and Wyspia艅ski windows were made, and still makes them.
Closer to the Planty park, the Stanis艂aw Wyspia艅ski Museum is the sensible second stop if the Art Nouveau rooms held you longer than the post-war ones.
Background
A 1931 competition for a purpose-built museum was won by a Warsaw team whose design was never built. The building that stands here is by Czes艂aw Boraty艅ski, Edward Kreisler and Boles艂aw Szmidt, planned from the start so that it could be raised in stages.
Work began in 1937 with completion set for 1944. The war stopped it, and the German occupiers used the unfinished shell as a casino. Building resumed in 1945, the museum opened on 28 November 1957, and the last stage was finished only in 1990.
Look down as you go in. The facade is Triassic dolomite, the entrance stairs Volhynian limestone, and the first-floor hall is paved in Morawica limestone with belemnite fossils cut through the surface.
