What to expect
Should you visit a museum branch that has no exhibitions? At MuFo Józefitów the answer is yes - if you are curious what happens to a photograph before it ever reaches a gallery wall. This address of the Museum of Photography in Krakow at Józefitów 16, in the Krowodrza district, is the institution’s working backstage, and the only way in is a guided tour that shows how a museum actually operates: how a photographic object is acquired, how it is treated in the conservation studio, how it is digitised, and how it is prepared for display. The route leads through modern conservation and digitisation workshops - spaces that in a conventional museum stay firmly off limits.
Be clear about what this is not: there are no galleries to wander, no headline prints to tick off. Tours run in small groups of up to 20 people, at fixed entry times, always with a guide. If you want to see photography on display, start at the main seat, MuFo Rakowicka ; come here afterwards if the craft behind the collection interests you more than the collection itself.
Visiting in practice
Plan around the fixed tour times, because there is no self-guided entry. Tours start Monday to Wednesday at 10:00, 11:00 and 12:00, and Thursday to Friday at 16:00, 17:00 and 18:00 - note the split schedule: mornings early in the week, late afternoons at its end. On Saturdays a single tour starts at 11:00 and requires advance booking by email to edukacja@mufo.pl at least 3 days before the chosen Saturday; the museum publishes no Sunday times. The group limit is 20 people, so on a busy day a given slot can fill.
A tour ticket costs 18 PLN standard, 14 PLN reduced, and tickets are also sold through the museum’s online ticket shop. The free-admission Tuesday that applies to the main exhibition at MuFo Rakowicka does not extend to this branch - Józefitów has no free day. For questions call +48 12 395 70 42, extension 1226. The building itself is open 9:00-13:00 Monday to Wednesday and 15:00-19:00 Thursday to Friday, but outside tour hours you will not get past the door.
Getting there
The branch stands at Józefitów 16 in Krowodrza, a few minutes’ walk from Plac Inwalidów. The nearest stop, Plac Inwalidów, is served by tram lines 4, 8, 13, 14 and 24 and by numerous bus lines (including 139, 159, 164, 169, 179, 189, 469, 501, 503 and 511). From the Old Town the tram ride takes around ten to fifteen minutes.
Nearby
Pair the tour with the exhibitions at the museum’s main seat, MuFo Rakowicka , on the other side of the centre - its main show explores what a photograph does. A walk through Krakowski Park towards the Błonia meadow brings you to the National Museum’s Main Building with its galleries of 20th and 21st century Polish art.
