What to expect

Six halls of Oskar Schindler’s former enamel works, under the sawtooth factory roof that still gives the place its silhouette, have housed Krakow’s main contemporary art institution since 2011. The Florentine architect Claudio Nardi kept the industrial shell and filled it with white walls and glass: roughly 4,000 square metres of exhibition space, built for more than 70 million PLN, half of it European Union money.
Level -1 holds the MOCAK Collection - work by over 200 artists, from Marina Abramović and Katarzyna Kozyra to the painters Wilhelm Sasnal and Marcin Maciejowski. Above it, temporary exhibitions rotate several times a year, usually built around a theme rather than a single artist. The Mieczysław Porębski Library is a working reading room rather than a vitrine; you are meant to sit down with a book. Video installations are everywhere, and they are what stretches the visit.
The profile is unambiguous: conceptual, socially engaged art that argues with history and politics. If you came to Krakow for oil paintings in gilt frames, this is the wrong address, and a few pieces provoke on purpose. What makes the place unusually readable is the labelling - wall texts run to several sentences, in Polish and English throughout.
Allow two hours for the Collection plus one temporary show, three if you watch the video pieces to the end. Tripadvisor reviewers converge on the same range. Ninety minutes covers level -1 alone on a free Thursday.
Tips
- Keep your Schindler’s Factory ticket. Show it at the MOCAK desk and entry drops to 15 PLN instead of 30 PLN. The two museums sit on the same former factory plot, and neither puts the discount on its front page.
- Thursday is only half free. Free entry covers the MOCAK Collection exhibitions on level -1. Temporary shows are sold at the reduced rate of 20 PLN that day, not free.
- Labels are in English. Every wall text and work description is bilingual, so no translation app is needed - not a given in Polish museums.
- Arrive before 17:00 if you want the whole building. The ticket desk stops selling at 18:30, last entry to building A is half an hour before closing and 15 minutes for the other spaces.
- No booking needed for individuals. Buy at the desk or online. Only groups (from seven people, 22 PLN each) and guided tours require a reservation: 150 PLN in Polish, 180 PLN in a foreign language.
- Wednesday from 16:00 is quiet hours. Until 19:00 there are no tours or workshops, and loud audio and harsh lighting are turned down. Free noise-cancelling headphones are available at reception any day of the week.
- Leave the backpack in a locker. Backpacks, bags, suitcases and umbrellas are banned from the galleries, and the lockers take nothing larger than 48 × 37 × 48 cm - smaller than a cabin case. Do not come straight from the station with luggage.
- Photography is allowed without a tripod and without flash. Cards are accepted at the desk and online through the museum’s ticket shop.
Getting there
- By tram - the Zabłocie stop, eight minutes from the Main Railway Station by the museum’s own reckoning, then a few minutes on foot along Lipowa. The pl. Bohaterów Getta and Limanowskiego stops also work and sit about ten minutes’ walk away.
- On foot - from the Main Square through Kazimierz and over the Bernatek footbridge, around 30 minutes. The walk is the cheapest introduction to Podgórze you will get.
- By car - there is no museum car park. Street parking in the side streets of Zabłocie fills up at weekends with traffic heading for Schindler’s Factory.
Nearby
- Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory - the next building on the same plot, with the exhibition on Krakow under German occupation. That is the ticket that earns you the MOCAK discount, so do the Factory first if you are doing both in one day.
- Cricoteka - the other contemporary address in Podgórze, devoted to Tadeusz Kantor’s theatre and drawings. 25 PLN, the same opening hours as MOCAK. The choice between them is art of the last two decades against the twentieth-century avant-garde stage.
- Bunkier Sztuki Gallery - a contemporary art gallery on the Planty ring in the Old Town, 11 PLN, no permanent collection. The option if you would rather not cross the river at all.
Background
Founded on 1 February 2010 and opened to the public on 19 May 2011, MOCAK is the youngest of Krakow’s large museums. Nardi’s conversion adapted six existing factory halls and added one new building; the sawtooth roofline is what survives most visibly of the original works. The site covers around 10,000 square metres, about 4,000 of it exhibition space.
Maria Anna Potocka directed the museum from the start until 2024 and assembled the core of the collection. Adam Budak has run it since 1 August 2025.
