What to expect

The Arsenal is the least obvious and arguably the most rewarding stop in the Czartoryski museum complex on Pijarska street, right by the surviving stretch of Krakow’s medieval walls. The building really was the city’s arsenal - founded in the 16th century and rebuilt repeatedly over the following centuries - before being handed over in 1874 to Prince Władysław Czartoryski for museum purposes. After two rounds of thorough renovation (2014-2016 and 2017-2021) it now operates as a branch of the National Museum in Krakow, directly across the street from the Czartoryski Museum and its Lady with an Ermine.

Inside you get two permanent galleries under one roof. The first floor holds the Zrodla (“Sources”) Gallery of Ancient Art, displaying the museum’s collection of ancient art - this is the gallery the branch is officially named after. The ground floor belongs to Arms and Colours in Old Poland, built around the MNK militaria holdings: one of the largest and most original collections of historic militaria in Poland, covering weapons, uniforms and historical memorabilia from the era of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. If you are deciding whether it is worth your time: this is a compact, quiet branch, far less crowded than the Leonardo rooms across the street, and the antiquity-plus-militaria pairing makes it an easy add-on rather than a half-day commitment.

Visiting in practice

The branch is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, and closed on Mondays. A standard ticket is 18 PLN, reduced 14 PLN, a family ticket 36 PLN, and pupils and students pay a symbolic 1 PLN - one of the cheapest serious museum tickets in the city if you carry a student card. Tuesday is the free-admission day for the permanent exhibitions, which here means the entire offer; expect more visitors then, but on a weekday morning it rarely gets uncomfortable. An audio guide costs 7 PLN with a standard ticket or 5 PLN with a reduced one, and guided tours can be booked for 170 PLN plus admission in Polish or 220 PLN plus admission in a foreign language. Tickets are sold online through the museum’s booking system at bilety.mnk.pl, though buying at the door is normally fine for this branch. The building is accessible: there is a lift and accessible restrooms. Plan on about an hour for both galleries.

Getting there

The Arsenal stands at Pijarska 8, tucked against the northern city walls a few dozen metres from St Florian’s Gate. From the Main Market Square it is a walk of under ten minutes along Floriańska street; from the main railway station and the Galeria Krakowska shopping centre, a similar stroll through the Planty park. The nearest tram stops are Stary Kleparz and Dworzec Główny, served by most lines circling the Old Town.

The obvious pairing is the Czartoryski Museum directly across the street - same historic foundation, separate ticket, and the two together make a full morning. The Czartoryski Library , the third element of the princely foundation, sits close by on św. Marka street. Two minutes north through the Planty, the Barbican continues the military theme begun in the Arms and Colours gallery with the real thing: a Gothic artillery fortress guarding St Florian’s Gate. For more of the National Museum’s collections, the Main Building with its 20th and 21st-century Polish art galleries is a fifteen-minute walk away.
