What to expect

This is the rare Krakow museum where the exhibits are meant to be used. Dozens of pinball tables and arcade cabinets fill a vaulted fifteenth-century cellar on Stradomska, halfway between the Main Square and Wawel Hill, and every one of them is set to free play - your ticket buys playing time, not a look. The oldest table is a Pamco from 1936. If you are in Krakow for three days of churches, altarpieces and Polish-only labels, this is the stop that needs no preparation at all.

The 300 square metres cover the whole history of the format. Electromechanical tables from the 1960s and 1970s come first: relays, solenoids, mechanical score reels that clatter. Then solid-state machines with electronic boards, then newer tables with screens. Along the walls stand arcade cabinets - Metal Slug, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, Terminator 2, a Twin Rifle shooter from 1971.

Best for teenagers and adults who remember arcades, and for children tall enough to reach a playfield, which in practice means eight and up. It is a standing visit and a loud one: bells, solenoids and dozens of soundtracks at once. Anyone after a quiet museum, or unable to spend an hour on their feet, should choose something else. There is a bar on site with coffee, tea and soft drinks.

Tips

  • The door is in the courtyard. Go through the gate at number 15, then down the stairs to a heavy cellar door. Reviewers repeat the same warning: from the pavement the place is close to invisible.
  • The ticket is sold by the hour. 50 PLN standard and 40 PLN reduced (under 18) buy one hour of play; the day pass costs 70 PLN and 60 PLN. Play is unlimited either way, so if you actually intend to play rather than browse, the day pass is the better buy.
  • Do not arrive in the last hour. On weekdays the museum opens at 14:00 and closes at 21:00; walking in forty minutes before closing wastes an hourly ticket.
  • Ask which machines are working. Maintenance of the oldest tables is the one recurring complaint in the reviews - weak flippers, dead displays, cabinets switched off. The staff know what is running today, and asking at the desk saves half your hour.
  • Start with the electromechanical tables. The screen-based machines you can approximate on an emulator at home. A 1960s score reel counting mechanically, you cannot.
  • No booking, no cards needed in advance. Tickets are sold at the door only; there is no online sales system. Quietest just after opening on a weekday, busiest on a rainy weekend afternoon.
  • The day pass lets you leave and return. Useful if you are pairing this with Wawel or with lunch in Kazimierz.
  • No language barrier. The exhibit is the machine, the instructions are three buttons, and the playfield text is in English.

Getting there

  • Tram: the Stradom stop, one of the main junctions on the edge of the Old Town, is effectively at the museum’s door.
  • On foot: about ten minutes from the Main Square down Grodzka and Stradomska towards Wawel Hill; fifteen minutes from the Old Synagogue in Kazimierz.
  • By car: Stradomska is a paid parking zone and a narrow through-route between the Old Town and Kazimierz. Use the car park at plac Na Groblach below Wawel and walk the rest.

Nearby

If you are picking one retro-gaming stop, the alternative is the Krakow Arcade Museum with more than 150 cabinets - a bigger collection and a dearer ticket, but it means a trip out to the Czyzyny district. Quieter and cheaper is the Electronics Museum on Wroclawska, where the consoles and computers are also out from behind glass. In the other direction, a few minutes uphill, stands Wawel Royal Castle - the obvious second half of the same afternoon.
