What to expect

This is the branch of the Museum of Krakow devoted to the things you cannot put in a display case: the city’s living traditions, rituals, crafts and sounds. Krakow takes its intangible heritage seriously, and two examples explain why. The szopka krakowska is a fantastically ornate nativity scene built around miniature Krakow landmarks - towers, domes and coloured foil - made by local families and judged in a December competition; in 2018 the tradition became Poland’s first entry on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The Lajkonik is a bearded rider in pseudo-Tatar costume on a hobby horse who parades through the city each June, taxing bystanders a light tap of his mace for good luck. This centre is the museum’s home for interpreting such customs, and it does so through temporary exhibitions and a busy programme of workshops and city walks rather than a fixed permanent display.

The venue itself is the House under the Cross (Dom pod Krzyżem), a historic building at Szpitalna 21 next to the Słowacki Theatre. Until 11 October 2026 it hosts “Krakow. Sounds, Melodies, Words”, an exhibition about the city’s soundscape that you listen to as much as look at. Sound artist Marcin Dymiter built compositions from archival and freshly recorded audio for every room. The four sections cover street noise and market cries, the great bells (including the old clapper of the royal Zygmunt bell, on loan from Wawel Cathedral), music at home and on the street from phonographs to smartphones, and finally the hejnał - the trumpet call from St Mary’s tower, broadcast on Polish radio since 1927.

Visiting in practice

Is it worth your time? If you have already seen the headline sights and want a low-crowd, curiosity-driven hour, yes - especially if the current exhibition’s theme appeals to you; check what is on before you go, since the programme rotates. An hour is a realistic visit length. Tickets for the temporary exhibition cost 26 PLN standard, 22 PLN reduced, 52 PLN for a family ticket; the museum does not advertise a free-admission day for this branch. Opening days are Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00-17:00, closed on Mondays. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing for individual visitors and 60 minutes for groups. A guided tour costs 150 PLN on top of entry tickets and must be arranged in advance by phone or email. Note that the museum has secured funding to modernise the building, so it is sensible to glance at the branch website for announcements before visiting.

Getting there

The centre sits on Szpitalna street at the north-eastern edge of the Old Town, about three minutes on foot from the Main Market Square and right by the Planty park ring. The Teatr Słowackiego tram stop is around the corner, and Krakow Główny railway station with the Galeria Krakowska mall is roughly a ten-minute walk, which makes this an easy first or last stop of a day in the centre.

The obvious pairing is the Main Market Square: Krzysztofory Palace tells the story of the city and displays a celebrated collection of Krakow nativity scenes, the Rynek Underground hides an archaeological route beneath the square itself, and the Sukiennice Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art hangs the national painting canon upstairs in the Cloth Hall. All three are within a few minutes’ walk of Szpitalna street.
