What to expect

A warehouse hall in the Czyżyny district, machines packed into narrow aisles, and nothing behind glass. The museum’s own catalogue lists 132 arcade cabinets, 27 pinball tables and eight rhythm machines, each with its year and its manufacturer. Your ticket buys playing time rather than admission: no coins, no tokens, unlimited games for as long as you have paid for.

The heart of the collection is the machines a living room cannot reproduce. Sit-in racers: Sega Rally from 1994, Daytona USA from 1993, the Manx TT and Harley Davidson motorcycle rigs. Then the light guns of Time Crisis II and The House of the Dead, and the board you stand on for Top Skater. Around them stand the dated classics: Pac Man from 1980, Donkey Kong from 1981, four Mortal Kombat cabinets spanning 1992 to 1997. A separate row holds pinball, from a 1980 Bally Xenon to the Stranger Things and Mandalorian licences, and the catalogue includes a 1986 Nintendo PlayChoice carrying serial number 00078.

Language is not a barrier here: the games run in their original English or Japanese and you play with your hands, not with captions. That is also the honest warning. There are no explanatory labels and no instructions of any kind, the controls change from cabinet to cabinet, and three separate first-hand visitor accounts name exactly that as the venue’s main weakness.

So this works best for teenagers and for adults who played these games the first time round. A six-year-old will need an adult on the controls; step platforms stand at the taller machines for shorter players. The hall is loud and deliberately plain - if you came for the history of video games told in wall texts, it is not here.

The collection grew out of the private hoard of Marcin Moszczyński. The Polish heritage portal Digital Heritage explains what halls like this were for. In 1980s Poland an original cabinet cost roughly what a new Polonez car cost and could pay for itself within a month - an arcade was a business, not a museum.

Tips

  • Two hours is the honest default. One hour (70 PLN, reduced 50 PLN) only works if you already know what you want to play; two hours cost 90 PLN and the open ticket 100 PLN. The open ticket is a wristband that lets you leave for lunch and come back the same day, and every first-hand account online recommends it.
  • Ask for the discount before you pay. Monday gives two hours for 50 PLN, Tuesday halves every ticket, Wednesday gives adults an open ticket at the one-hour price. Thursday does the same on a student card, Friday the same for a child with a paying adult. The museum applies none of them automatically, they do not combine, they exclude groups, and they lapse over public holidays and on extended-hours days.
  • No online tickets - cash or card at the door. The museum runs no web shop at all. Individual visitors never need to book; only groups of more than 15 people do.
  • Preview the hall before you cross the city. The museum publishes its complete machine list with years and makers, and a 360-degree walk-through of the interior. Two minutes on those two pages settle whether the trip out to Czyżyny is worth your afternoon.
  • Get off at Gałczyńskiego, not at Centralna. The museum’s own English page sends you to a stop called Centralna, and no tram goes there - it is a bus stop almost a kilometre from the door. The tram stop you want is Gałczyńskiego.
  • On weekdays do the neighbours first. The hall does not open until 14:00 Monday to Friday, while the Polish Aviation Museum and Cogiteon both close in the afternoon. On Saturday and Sunday it opens at 11:00, and on Sunday afternoons the popular cabinets draw queues of twenty to thirty minutes.
  • A real bad-weather option, not a nominal one. The museum states in its group offer that the hall is heated and air-conditioned. On Fridays and Saturdays it runs until 22:00, which makes it one of the few things in Krakow still going that late.
  • The museum publishes no accessibility information - call before visiting on +48 509 708 808. Nothing on the site addresses wheelchair or step-free access.

Getting there

Tram: line 1 from the Plac Wszystkich Świętych stop beside the Main Market Square, or line 14 from the Teatr Słowackiego stop near the main railway station. Either is about a 20-minute ride to the Gałczyńskiego stop, and from there the museum puts the walk at 10 to 12 minutes.

Bus: lines 174, 178, 183 and 578 call at a stop named Centralna. Despite sharing the museum’s street name, it sits almost a kilometre away - further out than the tram stop.

By car: free parking for more than 100 cars in front of the building. Central Krakow museums have no parking at all, so this is a reason in itself to drive here.

On foot: not an option. The Main Market Square is more than five kilometres west in a straight line.

Nearby

Czyżyny is the former Rakowice-Czyżyny airfield, so the obvious first half of the day is the Polish Aviation Museum . It opens at 9:00, costs nothing on Tuesdays, and shuts at roughly the hour the arcade starts up.

For the evening the real alternative is the Krakow Pinball Museum on ul. Stradomska - the same coin-free rule, 50 PLN, a 15th-century cellar near Wawel instead of a warehouse, but pinball only, and Czyżyny has 27 tables of its own. If you would rather have technology explained than operated, cross town to the Museum of Engineering and Technology in Kazimierz.
