What to expect

First, the practical headline: Hipolit House is temporarily closed. The Museum of Krakow lists the branch as shut, its permanent exhibition is out of service, and no opening hours or ticket prices are currently published. Events organised by the branch - guided city walks, lectures, workshops for schools - still go ahead on dates announced in the museum’s calendar, so the address is not entirely dormant, but you cannot currently walk in and tour the interiors.

When it operates, this is Krakow’s museum of how ordinary well-off townspeople actually lived. The house at plac Mariacki 3, named after the Hipolit merchant family who owned it in the 17th century, dates back to the 14th century and keeps traces of every era since: Gothic cellars and stone portals, a Renaissance window column, Baroque stucco work by Baltazar Fontana, Rococo and 19th-century wall paintings, and wooden galleries in the courtyard. The permanent exhibition, “Mieszczański dom” (a bourgeois house), opened in 2003 and recreates domestic interiors from the 17th to the 19th century, room by room. Look up at the facade even while the branch is closed: its unusually rich 17th-century sgraffito decoration, with figures interpreted as St Helena and St Sigismund, was partly restored in 2016.

Visiting in practice

Do not build a day around this one until it reopens. When it operates, this is a compact add-on to a Main Square itinerary rather than a destination in itself. If you are in Krakow now and want the bourgeois-interiors experience, treat this page as a rain check and spend your museum time at the open branches nearby instead.

Getting there

You will pass the building anyway: plac Mariacki is the small square directly behind St Mary’s Basilica, a minute’s walk from the Main Market Square. Everything here is pedestrian territory - from Kraków Główny railway station it is about a ten-minute walk along Floriańska or Szpitalna street, and the nearest tram stops sit on the Planty ring around the Old Town.

The strongest alternatives are within five minutes on foot. Krzysztofory Palace , the main seat of the Museum of Krakow across the Main Square, covers the city’s history in depth; the Rynek Underground archaeological route beneath the square is the city’s most popular high-tech exhibition and worth booking ahead; and the Czartoryski Museum on św. Jana street holds Leonardo da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine.
