What to expect

The Ethnographic Museum Krakow holds one of Poland’s oldest and richest folk culture collections, assembled in the early twentieth century by Seweryn Udziela, a schoolteacher and tireless collector. The permanent exhibition occupies the former town hall of Kazimierz on plac Wolnica - a fitting home, since Kazimierz was a separate town from Krakow for centuries, and the building itself is part of the story.

Inside you will find faithfully reconstructed interiors of village cottages from the Krakow countryside, folk costumes from Małopolska and beyond, everyday tools, objects tied to annual and family rituals, and folk art. This is a museum in the classic mould: display cases, original objects, an unhurried pace. If you want touchscreens and multimedia, look elsewhere; if you want to see what rural life in Poland actually looked like, this is first-hand material. Labels are traditional rather than flashy, so budget a little patience if you do not read Polish.

The museum’s second building, Dom Esterki at ul. Krakowska 46, hosts temporary exhibitions - as of July 2026 it shows “Batikara. Fantastyczna Józefa Kogut”. Both buildings keep the same hours.

Visiting in practice

An hour to ninety minutes covers the permanent exhibition. Tuesdays bring free entry to the permanent display and discounted temporary-exhibition tickets, and crowds are rarely an issue. Every Wednesday from 15:00 to 18:00 the museum runs quiet hours with reduced sensory stimulation, aimed at autistic visitors and anyone who prefers a calm visit. A combined ticket for both exhibitions costs PLN 35 (reduced 23), a family ticket PLN 30, and children under 7 enter free. Tickets are sold at the door.

Getting there

Plac Wolnica sits in the heart of Kazimierz, about ten minutes on foot from Wawel Castle. Trams running along ul. Krakowska stop closest. Walking from the Main Market Square via Grodzka and Stradomska takes a good fifteen minutes - on the way, on ul. Senacka, you pass the Archaeological Museum Krakow.

Nearby

A five-minute walk away, a historic tram depot houses the Museum of Engineering and Technology. The Old Synagogue stands on ul. Szeroka, and across the river, just past the Bernatek footbridge, Cricoteka keeps Tadeusz Kantor’s theatrical archive.
