The Butterfly Museum in Bochnia, which trades under its own name Muzeum Motyli Arthropoda, calls itself the largest permanent butterfly exhibition in Poland, and the claim is credible: over 6,000 specimens laid out as a systematic tour through the world’s butterfly families and genera. Worth knowing before you go: every specimen is preserved and pinned in display cases. This is a natural-history collection, not a live tropical butterfly house, so plan for a close-looking visit rather than a walk-through aviary.

The collection was started in 1980 by Jacek Kobiela, a visual artist and art conservator, and has grown across more than forty years and three generations of collectors. Its backbone is a complete set of Poland’s native day-flying butterflies plus species from the Bochnia area, but the show-stoppers come from far away: metallic South American Morpho, Papilio ulysses, African Charaxes, and beetles from the longhorn and stag families. Material came from Polish entomologists’ private collections, the founder’s own expeditions to South and Central America, and gifts that include butterflies sent by missionary sisters from the Central African Republic.

Beyond butterflies the cases hold other arthropods - grasshoppers, true bugs, mantises, cicadas and beetles - with separate displays on camouflage and mimicry. The museum is family- and school-friendly: it runs nature lessons pitched to the age of the group, screens documentaries on insect metamorphosis, and hands out magnifying glasses so visitors can inspect the specimens up close. Note that labelling is primarily in Polish, though the visual specimens and scientific Latin names carry most of the meaning for an international visitor.

Visiting in practice

The museum opens daily, Monday through Sunday, 11:00-16:00. School groups can book a museum lesson at 9:00 or 10:00 by prior reservation. A standard ticket is 29 PLN, reduced 26 PLN, and a family ticket runs 68-80 PLN depending on the number of people. Allow about an hour to work through the cases with a magnifying glass.

Getting there

Bochnia sits about 40 km east of Krakow on the A4 motorway and the Krakow-Tarnow railway line; a train from Krakow Glowny station takes roughly 40 minutes, making this an easy half-day detour. The museum is at Tadeusza Czackiego 9, in the Planty Salinarne area near the historic town centre and the old salt mine.

Nearby

The same town holds the Stanislaw Fischer Museum in Bochnia, with strong regional art and history collections. On the way back toward Krakow, pair the trip with the Wieliczka Salt Mine, and nature lovers will find a kindred spirit at the Ciezkowice Natural History Museum.
