What to expect

Bunkier Sztuki, the city-run contemporary art gallery on plac Szczepański in Krakow, has no permanent display, and its own regulations say so plainly: the exhibitions are all temporary. What you see depends entirely on what is up that month - usually two or three parallel shows across three levels, the basement, the ground floor and the first floor. Expect contemporary art, mostly Polish, sometimes with international guests, and rarely a name you already know.

Tickets are sold per exhibition at 11 PLN, so the first thing to do at the desk is ask how many shows are running.

The building is the other exhibit, and for many visitors the main one. Raw concrete cast in timber formwork, no windows on the square, a 1965 block dropped opposite the ornate Art Nouveau Palace of Art. Cracovians called it the bunker, and the gallery eventually took the nickname as its name. It is the only Brutalist building inside the Old Town.

The 2021-2024 refit modernised everything indoors: lift to every floor, climate control, new lighting.

The approach still disappoints. In June 2024 the architecture magazine Architektura-Murator reported that after a renovation costing 21.4 million PLN the electrical cabinets at the main entrance had multiplied rather than vanished. They are covered in graffiti, and the gallery replied that moving them would need permits and money it does not have.

Best for travellers who follow contemporary art and are willing to take whatever is currently on the walls. If you want a guaranteed collection, this is the wrong address and MOCAK across the river is the right one. Allow an hour for one exhibition and two if three are running.

The mezzanine bookshop and the cafe terrace in the Planty park add another half hour. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult, and the family space called Stacja Kreacja on the first floor costs a separate 5 PLN.

Tips

  • Do the ticket arithmetic first. Every exhibition is priced separately: 11 PLN standard, 6 PLN reduced, 20 PLN family. Three shows therefore cost 33 PLN. The combined ticket with the neighbouring Palace of Art costs 32 PLN, covers everything running in both buildings and stays valid for three days.
  • Tuesday is the cheap day, not a free day. Each exhibition drops to 5 PLN on Tuesdays. The gallery runs no free-entry day at all, so save those for the neighbours: Wednesday at Cricoteka , Thursday at MOCAK, Tuesday at the Sukiennice Gallery .
  • Nobody books ahead here. There are no timed slots and no reservation requirement; buy at the desk or online. The desk takes cards and closes at 18:30, which is also the last entry to the exhibitions.
  • Nobody promises English labels. The gallery publishes its website and exhibition pages in English but states nowhere which languages the wall texts are in. If readable labels decide your visit, call +48 668 808 352 or e-mail before you come. A guided tour in a foreign language costs 170 PLN on top of tickets, whether you are two people or twelve.
  • Quiet hours every Tuesday, 12:00 to 15:00. Loud sound works are turned down, harsh exhibition lighting is dimmed and no tours or workshops run in the galleries. It is designed for autistic and sensory-sensitive visitors, and it happens to be the calmest window of the week for everyone else.
  • Full step-free access, with one exception. A concrete ramp leads to the door and a lift serves every floor. Accessible toilets with call cords sit on three levels, and a calm room is open to anyone on the ground floor. The mezzanine bookshop is the only space the lift does not reach and is not wheelchair accessible. A tactile model of the building with Braille labels stands by the entrance.
  • Dogs yes, big backpacks no. Pets on a lead are welcome; large bags and backpacks are not allowed into the exhibition rooms and staff may check the size. Card payments are standard, and the currency is złoty only.
  • Check the calendar around holidays. In 2026 the gallery is closed on 4, 5 and 6 April, on 1 November and from 24 to 26 December, and it shuts at 15:00 on 31 December. It is open on 1 and 6 January, 1 and 3 May, 15 August and 11 November.

Getting there

On foot: about 200 m from the Main Square along ul. Szczepańska, three to four minutes. From Kraków Główny railway station, 15 minutes across the Planty park.

Tram: three stops called Teatr Bagatela ring the gallery from the west. Trams 1, 8, 18, 20 and 72 plus bus 124 stop on Podwale street, trams 1, 4, 8, 14 and 24 on Karmelicka street, trams 4, 14, 18, 20, 24 and 72 on Dunajewskiego street. From each it is roughly two minutes on foot via Szewska street.

Car: you cannot drive to the door. The gallery sits inside the Old Town restricted traffic zone between plac Szczepański and the Planty; the nearest disabled parking bay is on ul. Szczepańska.

Nearby

Two minutes away on the Main Square, the Sukiennice Gallery hangs 19th-century Polish painting - the opposite end of the same national story, in the same short walk. Four minutes north on ul. Pijarska, the Czartoryski Museum holds Leonardo da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine, though at 65 PLN it deserves its own afternoon. If contemporary art is the reason you came, MOCAK in Zabłocie keeps the same Tuesday to Sunday hours and, unlike Bunkier, has a permanent collection on show.

Background

The institution grew out of the state Bureau of Art Exhibitions network: the Kraków branch was founded in 1950 and the Municipal Exhibition Pavilion on plac Szczepański opened on 11 September 1965. Krystyna Tołłoczko-Różyska designed the building; Stefan Borzęcki and Antoni Hajdecki designed the concrete facade. It broke deliberately with the Old Town around it and was argued over from the start.

The gallery became a city institution in 1994 and took its present name a year later. Magdalena Abakanowicz, Tadeusz Kantor and Henry Moore have all shown here.

In 2019 the city floated merging Bunkier with MOCAK and dropped the plan after public opposition. The 2021-2024 works were the first full renovation in more than fifty years. The four underground levels of the original competition design were never built: digging inside the former city walls and moat proved too expensive. The gallery reopened on 8 February 2024.
