What to expect

The Archaeological Museum Krakow is the oldest institution of its kind in Poland, with roots reaching back to the mid-nineteenth century. It occupies a former Carmelite monastery on ul. Senacka that later spent decades as the Austrian St. Michael prison - the building’s own biography is as tangled as that of its exhibits.

The star of the collection is the Zbruch Idol: a stone statue pulled from the Zbruch river in the nineteenth century, one of the most famous objects associated with the beliefs of the early Slavs and a fixture of every textbook on the subject. The permanent exhibition, “Prehistory and Middle Ages of Małopolska”, runs from the Stone Age to medieval times through finds from the region. A separate Egyptian collection with mummies is surprisingly good for a museum of this size.

To be honest about it: this is a classic, compact museum. There is no scenography here, none of the multimedia theatrics of the Rynek Underground - just original artefacts, solid labels, and the kind of quiet that makes looking easy. In summer the museum garden between Senacka and the Planty park is a pleasant bonus.

Visiting in practice

An hour to ninety minutes is enough for an unhurried visit. Tuesdays bring free entry to the permanent exhibition (pick up a pass at the ticket desk). Watch the Sunday schedule: the museum runs shorter hours, 11:00 to 16:00, and last entry is half an hour before closing. A family ticket costs PLN 45. From May to October the museum also opens the crypts of St. Adalbert’s church on the Main Market Square, with a display on the city’s beginnings; there is a further branch in Nowa Huta-Branice.

Getting there

Ul. Senacka branches off Grodzka, halfway between the Main Market Square and Wawel - either is a five-minute walk. You will not need public transport; this is the compact, walkable core of the Old Town, right by the Planty park.

Nearby

Two minutes along ul. Kanonicza stands the Bishop Erazm Ciołek Palace with art of old Poland, and at the end of the same street rises the hill of Wawel Royal Castle. In the other direction, beneath the main square, the Rynek Underground shows archaeology in full multimedia dress - an interesting counterpoint to Senacka.
