What to expect

This is the Archaeological Museum of Krakow ’s countryside outpost: a Renaissance manor-park complex in Branice, on the far eastern edge of Nowa Huta, a long way from the tourist core. The exhibitions - one permanent show plus temporary displays - occupy the complex’s Renaissance residence, known as the lamus, and the surrounding park is free to stroll during exhibition hours.

The reason a Krakow archaeology museum keeps a branch out here is a good story in itself. When construction of Nowa Huta - the socialist model town and its giant steelworks - began in 1949, the builders immediately started turning up archaeological finds: the new city was rising on land settled since prehistory. In September 1950 the Ministry of Culture set up a dedicated institution, the Directorate of Excavation Works in Nowa Huta, and the 1950s through 1970s became the most intensive period of digging, with archaeologists working alongside the bulldozers. After several moves around the city, the branch settled in the Branice manor complex in 2007.

The permanent exhibition, “Archeolodzy dla Nowej Huty” (Archaeologists for Nowa Huta), open since May 2023, tells exactly that story: on panels and screens you follow the history of the institution and the earliest past of the Nowa Huta lands, illustrated with a wealth of photographs from the branch’s seven decades. Set your expectations accordingly - this is a small, documentary-style display about people and research rather than a hall of treasures. It rewards visitors already curious about Nowa Huta or the history of Polish archaeology; for everyone else, the quiet manor and park are half the appeal.

Visiting in practice

Check the unusual hours before you commit to the trip. On weekdays the branch is open all year, but only from 10:00 to 14:00 - a morning visit, in other words. Weekends are seasonal: from May to October, Saturdays and Sundays run 14:00-18:00, while from November to April the branch is closed at weekends entirely. Last entry to the museum and the park is 30 minutes before closing. Tickets are among the cheapest in Krakow: 6 PLN standard, 5 PLN reduced, or a combined pass for the permanent and temporary exhibitions at 8 PLN (6 PLN reduced). The free-admission day is Monday - the mirror image of the main museum on Senacka street, which is closed on Mondays, so a free Monday trip to Branice is a genuine option. Getting there

Branice sits at the eastern limit of Nowa Huta, beyond the steelworks, well over ten kilometres from the Main Market Square - treat it as a half-day excursion rather than a stop on a city-centre walk. By car the approach is along Igołomska street, which city buses towards Branice also follow; check the current MPK timetable before setting out. The address is ul. Sasanek 2A.
