Free Museums in Krakow: Which Day to Pick and What to Watch For

Free museums in Krakow are easy to find and easy to get wrong. Most of the big museums waive their ticket on one fixed weekday, but the free pass works differently at each door: desk-only on the day, online days ahead, or, at Auschwitz-Birkenau, a named booking. On a one- or two-day stay, the question is not just which day, but which free entry you can actually secure.

Why free days exist

It is the law, not goodwill. Poland’s Museums Act of 21 November 1996 says in Article 10(2) that on one day a week, admission to museums’ permanent exhibitions is free (consolidated text: Dz.U. 2022 poz. 385). The provision covers museums in general, and each museum’s director sets the day and announces it.

That is why Krakow’s week looks scattered. The National Museum in Krakow chose Tuesday for all its branches, while the Museum of Krakow spreads its branches from Monday to Sunday. Cricoteka (a cultural institution of the Małopolska Region) takes Wednesday and MOCAK (a cultural institution of the City of Krakow) Thursday.

The word that matters for you is “permanent”. Temporary shows can still cost money on the free day: MOCAK’s free Thursday covers only its collection on level -1. Manggha is the welcome exception, where the free Tuesday includes the temporary exhibitions.

Museums by free weekday

Every museum in our Krakow catalogue with a standing free weekday is listed below. Where a condition decides whether you get in, it sits next to the venue. Tuesday is the day to build a trip around: the permanent exhibitions of every open National Museum branch are free, plus a long list of other venues.

Monday (Monday’s free museums with hours ):

• Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory - open 10:00-15:00 on Mondays, last entry 13:30; no booking, free passes come from a limited pool at the desk.
• Old Synagogue in Kazimierz and Town Hall Tower on the Main Square - free passes on bilety.muzeumkrakowa.pl, or at the desk while places last.
• Wawel Royal Castle - selected exhibitions only; see the catches below.
• Archaeological Museum - Nowa Huta-Branice Branch - a half-day excursion: tram 10 or 21 to Pleszów, then bus 131 to Sasanek.

Tuesday (Tuesday’s free museums with hours ):

• National Museum branches in the Old Town: Sukiennice Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Art , Jan Matejko House , Józef Mehoffer House , Stanisław Wyspiański Museum , Bishop Erazm Ciołek Palace , Szołayski House , MNK Arsenal and Czapski Museum .
• Czartoryski Museum , home of Leonardo’s “Lady with an Ermine” - tickets are timed and limited, and the free ones are issued at the museum’s ticket desk on the day of the visit only.
• National Museum Main Building on al. 3 Maja, fifteen minutes on foot from the Main Square.
• Rynek Underground - open only 10:00-15:00 on Tuesdays, no booking, passes at the desk on the day.
• Krzysztofory Palace - permanent exhibition only.
• Archaeological Museum on ul. Senacka and the St Adalbert’s Church Archaeological Reserve on the Main Square, open seasonally from May to October.
• Ethnographic Museum in Kazimierz.
• Museum of Engineering and Technology in Kazimierz - places are limited, and only a free pass collected in advance, at the desk or on the ticketing site, guarantees one.
• Manggha Museum and the Europe - Far East Gallery across the Vistula, ten minutes on foot from Wawel over the Grunwaldzki bridge.
• MuFo Rakowicka - the main exhibition is free.
• Rydlówka in Bronowice - passes on bilety.muzeumkrakowa.pl.
• Polish Aviation Museum in Czyżyny - trams 4, 5, 9, 10, 52 or 75 to the “Muzeum Lotnictwa Polskiego” stop, a little over ten minutes from Rondo Mogilskie.

Wednesday (Wednesday’s free museums with hours ):

• Eagle Pharmacy and Cricoteka , both in Podgórze.
• Collegium Maius - free for the self-guided route 13:30-17:00, last entry 16:30; guided tours cost the usual price.
• Pomorska Street - the former Gestapo headquarters with its surviving cells and the exhibition “People of Krakow in Times of Terror 1939-1945-1956”.
• The two shelters of Nowa Huta Underground, os. Szkolne 22 and os. Szkolne 37 - collect passes ahead on bilety.muzeumkrakowa.pl and allow about 30 minutes each way from the main railway station area.

Thursday (Thursday’s free museums with hours ):

• MOCAK - the MOCAK Collection on level -1 is free, the temporary exhibitions are not.
• Podgórze Museum - permanent exhibition only.

Friday (free museums on Friday ): no museum in our Krakow catalogue has Friday as a standing free day. The always-free venues below are what is left.

Saturday (free museums on Saturday ): the ING PAN Geological Museum is free on the last Saturday of the month only. It can close for events, as it will on 24-26 September 2026, so check its site before you go.

Sunday (Sunday’s free museums with hours ):

• Home Army Museum - admission to the exhibitions is free every Sunday during opening hours.
• Museum of the Scouting Movement in Swoszowice - passes on bilety.muzeumkrakowa.pl; allow 30-40 minutes each way from the Main Square.

Always free

A few places never charge at all. Two are useful to a short-stay visitor:

• Dominican Museum on ul. Stolarska - free, but you must book a free ticket for a set day and time in advance, and it opens only Thursday to Saturday.
• Amber Museum on ul. Świętego Jana, two minutes north of the Main Square - daily 10:00-20:00, no booking. Since November 2023 it has been a single reduced display inside the Boruni jewellery gallery. Fifteen to twenty minutes covers it: fine as a stop on the way to the square, not worth a special trip.

The rest need an appointment or keep short hours:

• By appointment: the AGH Museum , the Museum of the Krakow University of Economics , the Brother Albert Museum and the Carmelite Museum Na Piasku .
• Short hours: the Historical and Missionary Museum , closed during the summer break, and the Maria Angela Truszkowska Museum .
• Seasonal: Museum Harbour on Bulwar Rodła, May to the end of October.

Hours for each are on the always-free museums in Krakow page. The Academy of Fine Arts Museum is temporarily closed.

Free on anniversary dates

The Kościuszko Museum at the Kościuszko Mound has no free weekday. Entry is free on three anniversaries: 4 February (Kościuszko’s birthday), 24 March (his oath on the Main Square in 1794) and 15 October (the day he died). Its visiting rules also allow other free days set by the Kościuszko Mound Committee.

On any other day the ticket is 34 PLN (reduced 26 PLN) and covers both the museum and the climb up the mound. The mound is roughly 3 km west of the Main Square: tram 1, 2 or 6 to Salwator, then a steep 20-minute walk uphill. Use a free date if your trip lands on one; do not plan a trip around it.

The catches

Wawel’s free Monday is partial and desk-only. The castle’s free window runs 10:00-16:00 and covers selected exhibitions only. From 1 July to 30 September that means Castle Underground, plus Between the Walls from 1 August. From 1 October to 31 December it is the castle’s second floor (the State Rooms and the Turkish Tents) and the Crown Treasury.

Passes come from the ticket desk on the day only, with no advance booking, and one person may collect them for at most five visitors. The castle itself warns that the passes may run out before the ticket desks close. Every November it also runs “Darmowy Listopad” (Free November), with free visits to selected exhibitions.

Temporary exhibitions are billed separately. The free day normally covers the permanent collection. Big temporary shows, especially at the National Museum Main Building and MOCAK, carry their own ticket even on Tuesday or Thursday.

Auschwitz-Birkenau runs on bookings, not weekdays. The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum in Oświęcim is free for individual visitors, but only with a named entry pass, and none are issued at the gate. Its booking site says free passes for a visit without an educator are available online only, no later than 7 days before the planned visit or until the pool runs out.

Self-guided entry starts in the afternoon: from 13:00 in December to 17:00 from April to September, because the earlier hours belong to paid educator-led tours. Add three to four hours of travel from Krakow and back. It is a full day, not an add-on to a city route.

Planning a free-museum day

• Desk-only passes. The Czartoryski Museum and Rynek Underground on Tuesday, Schindler’s Factory and Wawel on Monday: no advance booking, so be there at opening and expect a queue.
• Passes you can take online ahead. The Old Synagogue, Town Hall Tower, Eagle Pharmacy, Pomorska Street, both Nowa Huta shelters, Rydlówka and the Scouting Movement museum release free passes on bilety.muzeumkrakowa.pl; the desk only holds what is left.
• Five per person. At Wawel and at the Museum of Krakow desks, one person can collect free passes for at most five visitors, so a larger group has to queue together.
• Group by district. Tuesday’s Old Town cluster is walkable, the Eagle Pharmacy and Cricoteka pair up in Podgórze on Wednesday, and MOCAK and the Podgórze Museum do the same on Thursday. Nowa Huta, Czyżyny, Branice and Swoszowice each take a separate trip.
• On Monday, Schindler first. Both the factory and the Old Synagogue close at 15:00 that day. The factory takes no bookings and needs 90-120 minutes, so queue there at opening and take the synagogue pass online beforehand.
• Check the museum’s site on the day. Wawel’s free list changes with the season, and individual museums move or cancel a free day around events.
