Hotel Forum
29 May 2026 - 10 January 2027
The concrete hotel on the Vistula facing Wawel Castle took guests for only fourteen years, and Krakow is still arguing over what to do with it. The Podg贸rze Museum tells its story through the people who ran it, using the keepsakes they saved, because much of the hotel’s paperwork is lost or in private hands.
Podg贸rze Museum on the exhibition (our translation of the Polish original; the museum publishes no English text for this show):
Striking in its architectural form, an outstanding example of brutalism, the reinforced-concrete landmark that dominates what was once the intimate landscape of Ludwin贸w. Hotel Forum was unlucky with its times, though lucky with its people - the staff of more than 600 for whom it was more than a workplace - it was a home with windows wide open to the Western world.
What to expect
The exhibition fills the second floor of the museum building at Limanowskiego 51, and there is a large lift. According to the museum’s notes for a tour for parents with babies, pushchairs cannot go into the exhibition and stay in the ground-floor cloakroom, so bring a sling or carrier for a baby. The rooms include tactile elements and learning stations.
The Polish Press Agency’s opening report describes the route: it starts with the history of hospitality in Krakow and the city’s oldest hotels, moves on to the Forum’s construction and working life, and ends with what became of the building after it closed. The review in “Architektura-Murator” notes that many object labels quote the staff, and that their recorded memories can be heard in the rooms.
What is worth seeing:
- The hotel’s guest book, saved by technical manager Zbigniew Galuba; the museum calls it one of the most valuable surviving records.
- A waiter’s notebook full of dedications and thanks from guests, shown with the hotel’s tableware, chairs from its rooms and the caf茅 menu (PAP).
- Staff uniforms hung beside prom and New Year’s Eve dresses, a reminder that Krakow schools held their proms in the Forum’s conference halls for years (“Architektura-Murator”).
- A view of the hotel in torn-paper collage by Albin Talik, which the museum names in its announcement of a children’s workshop.
- Photocopies of key documents, including the decision to build the “Hotel Kongresowy” (Congress Hotel), rescued by the technical staff.
The museum publishes neither an object count nor a room count. Allow at least an hour. The “Architektura-Murator” reviewer says two hours pass without a dull minute, and the recordings take time. The museum’s exhibition page also carries an episode of the Polish-language podcast “Pytam, bo mnie to kr臋ci”, in which Ryszard Kozik talks to the curator.
Context
The design came out of a 1975 competition run by SARP, the Association of Polish Architects. Janusz Ingarden’s team bent the block to follow the curve of the Vistula and left a gap under the upper floors so that it would not hide Wawel. Construction began in 1978 and stalled repeatedly in the economic crisis of the 1980s. Orbis, the state travel agency, opened the four-star hotel on 15 May 1988; with almost 280 rooms, a pool, a sauna and a casino, it was one of the most modern hotels in Poland.
It closed on 10 November 2002, officially because the Vistula was soaking the foundations and flooding the basements, although a building inspection in 2007 found the structure still sound. For years the facade was used as a giant billboard.
In October 2025 the regional heritage officer entered the building in the monuments register. After the owner appealed, the Ministry of Culture set that decision aside on 13 May 2026, partly because it did not define clearly what was protected and what its value was. The case went back to the regional officer to decide again.
Tickets and time
“Hotel Forum” has its own ticket: 20 PLN standard, 18 PLN concession, 40 PLN family. With the Krakowska Karta Miejska, the city card for Krakow residents, you pay 16 PLN (14.40 PLN concession), with the Large Family Card 10 PLN; the museum’s price list names no discount for tourist cards. The permanent exhibition about Podg贸rze has separate prices (22 PLN standard, 16 PLN concession, 44 PLN family). A guided tour of this exhibition for a group costs 150 PLN on top of admission.
Free Thursday does not cover this exhibition. The museum states that free admission on Thursdays applies only to the permanent exhibition. If you want to see both, come on a Thursday and pay only for “Hotel Forum”.
Opening hours: Wednesday 11:00-19:00, Thursday to Sunday 10:00-17:00 (10 AM to 5 PM), last entry half an hour before closing. The branch is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, on 1 and 11 November and on 24, 25 and 31 December. On 26 December “Hotel Forum” opens 10:00-17:00. The exhibition page mentions no booking or timed entry for individual visitors.
English on site: the museum has no English page for this show and does not say whether labels are translated or whether there is an audio guide, so assume the captions and recordings are in Polish. The museum runs a free guided tour in English on 27 September 2026 (see Events), plus inclusive tours with audio description and Polish Sign Language.
Who it is for: anyone curious about late-communist Poland, brutalist architecture and oral history. The review in “Architektura-Murator” stresses that you do not need to be an architecture enthusiast. Skip it if you want reconstructed hotel rooms: this is a show of keepsakes, documents and testimony.
Without Polish, it is best seen on the English tour. Afterwards, walk to the building itself on Konopnickiej street, about half an hour along the Vistula.

What the press says
Architektura-Murator (29 May 2026, Julia Dragovi膰): reviewing the opening, she ranks it among the best exhibitions at any Museum of Krakow branch in recent years because it is about people and objects rather than the building alone. She also mentions a documentary film about the hotel due in November - review, in Polish .
PAP / dzieje.pl (28 May 2026): the Polish Press Agency’s opening report lists the keepsakes lent by former staff, many of which reached them when the hotel’s furnishings were sold off after it closed; Radio Krak贸w ran the same report that day - article, in Polish .
Going. MORE (29 May 2026, Stanis艂aw Bry艣): an opening-day piece that presents the curator as someone who passes no verdict on the building and instead collects the social history of its staff - article, in Polish .
Magiczny Krak贸w / krakow.pl (22 May 2026, updated 1 June 2026, City Media Office): the city’s post-opening report names the former staff’s memories and private archives as the foundation of the show, with the surviving records and the guest book alongside - article, in Polish .
LoveKrak贸w.pl (25 April 2026, editorial staff): a preview stressing that the hotel’s history had to be pieced together from staff memories, because the building plans are in private hands and the suppliers’ archives no longer exist - article, in Polish .
Five pieces: one review, favourable, and four previews or opening reports; no English-language coverage found. Curator Melania Tutak, who heads the Podg贸rze Museum, told PAP she wants the exhibition “to show the light in the windows of Hotel Forum” and to stir people’s imagination.
