Artifacts of Memory

From 8 to 30 August 2026, the Museum of Krakow’s Krzysztofory Palace showed “Artifacts of Memory”, IMAGO’s small exhibition on the International Folk Art Fair, made for its 50th edition.

The posters, photographs, pin badges, catalogues from the first editions, lace, sculptures, painted Easter eggs and works by people connected with the Fair presented here are selected traces of this long history. They do not form a complete, chronological story. Yet each of them holds on to a fragment of memory. A poster recalls the visual language and atmosphere of a particular edition. A catalogue preserves the names of the exhibitors, the programme of the event and the way it was organised. A pin badge becomes a sign of community or a souvenir of an anniversary. A work of art keeps the trace of the hand, the material, the technique and the time in which it was made.

What to expect

The show had no room of its own. The objects stood in the entrance hall of the Krzysztofory Palace and at marked points inside the permanent exhibition “Krakow from the Beginning, Without End” on the first floor. That placed the fair’s story next to the museum’s account of Krakow as a city of merchants and craftsmen, and made it easy to see as part of a full visit to the palace.

Alongside the fair memorabilia were works by folk makers: Krakow bobbin lace, work by plaiting craftspeople, Lemko painted Easter eggs and carvings. Admission was free. It meant most to visitors who knew the fair from summers on the Market Square; for a first-time visitor to Krakow it was more of an extra on the way through the permanent exhibition.

Context

The International Folk Art Fair began in 1973 on Krakow’s Main Market Square, on the initiative of Cepelia, the central body of Poland’s folk art and craft cooperatives. Its 50th, jubilee edition ran from 8 to 23 August 2026. Today IMAGO Folk Art Centre runs the fair. According to the exhibition page, IMAGO is also the patron of the Krzysztofory Palace exhibition “Art and Trade. Krakow of Craftsmen”, and it prepared “Artifacts of Memory” within that partnership.

The exhibition touched on two different heritage lists, which are easy to confuse. The craft of making Krakow bobbin lace is on Poland’s National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, not on a UNESCO list. What UNESCO inscribed in 2025, on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, were the plaiting traditions of Poland.

What the press says

No review of the exhibition itself was found, and no English-language coverage. Polish reports on the jubilee fair mentioned it:

After the show

“Artifacts of Memory” closed on 30 August 2026, a week after the last day of the fair. The museum gives no sign that the show will travel. No catalogue of the exhibition was found, either on the museum’s pages or in IMAGO’s announcements.

The press did not review the exhibition separately: Radio Kraków (PAP) and Puls Krakowa mentioned it in their fair reports as part of the jubilee programme. The museum has published no attendance figures.

Two temporary exhibitions are now on at the Krzysztofory Palace, both until 25 October 2026:

• “Art and Trade. Krakow of Craftsmen” - the world of Krakow’s guilds and workshops from the 15th to the 20th century; IMAGO, the fair’s organiser, is its patron.
• “Krakow Bobbin Lace - A Living Heritage” - marking ten years of the lace on the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage; it takes further a thread that was one of several in “Artifacts of Memory”.

Beyond the palace, “Krakow. Sounds, Melodies, Words” at the Intangible Heritage Interpretation Centre of Krakow (until 11 October 2026) looks at the city’s intangible heritage through sound, and IMAGO is listed as its partner.
