Regional Museum in Janów Lubelski

What to expect

The largest object in the Janów Lubelski museum is the building it occupies. The prison of 1825-1826, which regional guidebooks call the second-largest penal institution in the Lublin province under Russian rule, looks the part: three storeys, corner watchtowers, barred windows, a walled courtyard. Walking round the outside takes as long as seeing the inside, and it is worth as much.

Inside, one room is open to the public: the former prison chapel, back in use since 2012. The rest of the building still waits for the restoration begun in 2009. That single room rotates slices of what the museum has gathered in forty years. It shows the history of the prison and its inmates, archaeology from the Janów district, and weaving equipment covering the whole process from raw flax through spinning wheel and winder to the loom.

The biggest holding is pottery from Łążek Garncarski, which the museum calls the largest collection of its kind in Poland, with work by Mateusz Startek, a winner of the Oskar Kolberg Prize. Temporary shows fill the calendar, some of them outdoors on the town square. One about the postwar partisan commander Hieronim Dekutowski, code name Zapora, prepared by the Lublin branch of the Institute of National Remembrance, stood there from 12 June to 31 July 2026. Since January 2025 the museum has also run a monthly evening meeting on a chosen Thursday at 18:00, in Polish, aimed at adults and seniors, at the Zamoyskiego office.

Be clear about what you are walking into. In April 2025 the town’s own portal described the museum’s two buildings as provisional stopgaps, one of them with no heating and with no reception, cloakroom or proper exhibition halls. There is no English version of the website, so assume Polish-only labels and no English-speaking staff unless you arrange it by telephone in advance.

This is a museum for someone already interested in the subject: penal history, the archaeology of one Polish district, Lublin-region folk pottery and weaving, or family roots in the area. If you want a regional museum rebuilt from scratch, with a lift and screens, that is 40 kilometres north in Kraśnik.

Tips

• Weekdays only, and they end early. Open Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 15:30, closed at weekends. A weekend trip to the Janów Forests and the Janów reservoir cannot include the museum; come on a weekday morning or not at all.
• Telephone before you set out. The museum publishes no admission price list, and the office and the exhibition room have separate addresses - the office at ul. Jana Zamoyskiego 52, the display room at ul. Ogrodowa 3a. One call to 15 872 46 79 settles the price, the address and what is currently on show.
• Allow 45 minutes. That covers the display room and a walk round the prison from the outside. The museum publishes no suggested visit length; this is our estimate from the number of rooms open.
• Dress as if you were staying outdoors. Outside the heating season the exhibition room is cold, and there is no cloakroom, so your coat stays on you.
• Neither building has a lift. Both have three storeys and no lift. An accessible toilet exists only at ul. Ogrodowa 3a; marked disabled parking bays are provided at both, and assistance dogs are welcome at both. There is no Braille signage, no induction loop and no sign language interpreter.
• Book group sessions a week ahead. A museum lesson costs 5 PLN per person and runs 45 minutes; a workshop costs 15 PLN per person and runs 90 minutes. Both run Monday to Friday by arrangement. The subjects are strictly local: the prehistory of the Janów district, reading bones and old burial customs, and pottery.
• The deepest thing on sale is a journal. “Janowskie Korzenie” has appeared twice a year without a break since 2003, 96 pages an issue. Current numbers cost 20 PLN and back numbers 10 PLN, sold at the office on Zamoyskiego. It is in Polish only, but it is where the museum’s real research goes.
• See the pottery being made, not displayed. Thirteen kilometres out of town, at Łążek Garncarski, the museum runs the national potters’ meetings in early July. Admission is free and the wheels are turning; the 19th edition ran 2-4 July 2026. It is the one weekend in the year when this museum’s subject is open on a Saturday.

Getting there

By car: Janów Lubelski lies 61 kilometres south of Lublin on the S19 expressway towards Rzeszów, with national road 74 crossing it; the drive from Lublin takes about an hour. Both museum buildings have a marked disabled parking bay, behind the one on Zamoyskiego and in front of the one on Ogrodowa.

By bus: minibuses and coaches on the Lublin - Kraśnik - Janów Lubelski route reach the bus station in the town centre. County routes are timetabled by the district authority; commercial carriers sell through the usual online ticket sites.

By train: not possible. Janów Lubelski has no passenger rail service; the nearest station with trains is Kraśnik, 40 kilometres north.

On foot: both addresses are in the town centre, a few minutes apart. The office at ul. Jana Zamoyskiego 52 has two entrances, a paved path at the front and steps at the back. The display room stands at the junction of ul. Ogrodowa and ul. Jana Pawła II, with a single street entrance.

Nearby

The Janów district borders the Biłgoraj country, which makes the Biłgoraj regional museum the obvious companion for the same local history and ethnography. If Janów leaves you wanting a rebuilt regional museum, drive 40 kilometres north to the Kraśnik regional museum , reopened in 2020 with a display on the 24th Uhlan Regiment. Heading into the Roztocze hills, Guciów farmstead shows the same rural material culture standing in its own buildings, not behind glass.

Background

The museum in Janów was founded three times. The first attempt was made by Tadeusz Seweryn, an ethnographer of folk art hiding in the town under an assumed name after the Oath Crisis of 1917. His County Museum opened in 1919 with four sections, in the attic of the former district chancellery known as the old post office. Within two years, in Seweryn’s own account, the collection had been wasted and plundered.

The second beginning came from the prison: on 10 June 1984 a Museum of Armed Struggle opened there, and from 1 January 1986 it was a branch of the district museum in Sandomierz. The third was administrative: a town council resolution of 21 July 1992 created the Regional Museum, and a year later, in 1993, it was absorbed into the local cultural centre.

It became independent only on 30 December 1996, with departments of history and art, ethnography, archaeology and a photography gallery. Since 2019 the offices have been back in the attic of the old post office, the exact room where Seweryn started a century earlier.
