Jacek Kosiba "Black and White Beskid" - Photography Exhibition
25 September 2026 - 20 December 2026
Jacek Kosiba, a photographer from the village of Str贸偶贸wka just outside Gorlice, shows the Low Beskids (Beskid Niski) in black and white at the Tar-Makers’ Homestead (Zagroda Maziarska) in 艁osie, a rural branch of the Gorlice museum at 艁osie 34 in the Ropa municipality. The show opened on 25 September 2026 as part of European Heritage Days and runs until 20 December 2026. The museum has no English text on the show; the words below are our translation of its Polish announcement.
The Gorlice museum (Muzeum - Dwory Karwacjan贸w i G艂adysz贸w) on the exhibition:
We invite you to the Tar-Makers’ Homestead in 艁osie on 25 September at 16:00 for the opening of Jacek Kosiba’s exhibition - an event held as part of European Heritage Days 2026. The exhibition will be on display until 20 December 2026.
What to expect
The museum’s entire text is an invitation to the opening plus the closing date, so very little is known about the show itself. It gives neither the number of photographs nor the building of the homestead they hang in. According to the report on the opening by the local news site halogorlice.info, Kosiba has left colour out altogether and lets light, shadow and texture carry the mountain landscapes.
The photographs are an addition to the homestead, not the other way round. Zagroda Maziarska is a Lemko farmstead preserved where it stands: a cottage (chy偶a) from 1899, a barn and a granary, plus the one building moved here from elsewhere, a cottage from the village of Bartne dating from 1928. The permanent display tells the story of the maziarze, travelling traders in cart grease, lubricants and oil, who were the main breadwinners of 艁osie until the Second World War. The farm building holds original trading wagons, among them the wagon of Dymitr Kare艂, one of the village’s last grease traders.
Allow 45-60 minutes for the homestead and the photographs together. That is our estimate; the museum gives no visiting time. Keep a quarter of an hour for the village: the homestead stands next to a working Greek Catholic church from 1810, and the museum points out that an unusually large number of houses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries survive in 艁osie.
Context
Jacek Kosiba was born in 1944 in Str贸偶贸wka near Gorlice and has been taking photographs since 1956. The note on him in the Gorlice museum’s index of artists says that he qualified as a professional photographer in Rzesz贸w in 1974 and as a photography instructor four years later, and that he was for many years active in the photographic societies of Gorlice and Nowy S膮cz. Since 2008 he has held more than a dozen solo shows, among them “Impresje Beskidzkie” (Beskid Impressions) and “Klimk贸wka oaza spokoju” (Klimk贸wka, an Oasis of Calm), and he still treats photography as an amateur passion.
The museum knows his work: his pictures hung at the Karwacjan Manor in Gorlice over the turn of 2016 and 2017, and the homestead’s plan for 2021 included an online show of his called “Spacerem po 艁osiu” (A Walk around 艁osie). 艁osie itself is an old Lemko village in the valley of the Ropa river. The deportations of Operation Vistula in 1947 changed who lived there and broke the grease trade; the last trader set out on the road in the 1970s.
Tickets and time
Admission: the Tar-Makers’ Homestead costs 12 PLN, reduced 6 PLN (pupils, students, seniors, pensioners, people with disabilities), or 5 PLN with the Polish Large Family Card (Karta Du偶ej Rodziny). The homestead’s price list has no separate ticket for temporary shows, so ordinary admission covers the photographs. That is our reading of the price list; the museum does not say it in so many words.
Free Tuesdays: the museum makes Tuesday a free day at all its branches, and the homestead sells no separate ticket for temporary shows, so the free Tuesday should cover the show as well - again our reading.
Combined tickets: the homestead plus the wooden church in Bartne costs 13 PLN (reduced 7 PLN), valid for seven days; the church is opened on request by phone to Father 艁ukasz Kopcza, +48 18 351 84 54. The branch page also lists a “gallery + homestead” ticket at 17 PLN (reduced 9 PLN), but the museum’s main price list does not include it and does not say which gallery it means, so ask at the desk before you plan around it.
Hours: until the end of October, Tuesday to Friday 9:00-16:30 (9 AM to 4:30 PM), Saturday and Sunday 9:00-14:30. From November to March, Tuesday to Friday 8:30-16:00, Saturday 9:00-14:30, closed on Sunday. The display is not open on Mondays, and the homestead is also closed on 1 and 11 November, among other holidays. The show ends on Sunday 20 December, a day the homestead is closed, so the last chance is Saturday 19 December, 9:00-14:30. Current rules are on the museum’s tickets and opening hours page (Polish only).
When to go: the museum says the show runs until 20 December 2026. Until the end of October the homestead also opens on Sundays; from November it opens Tuesday to Saturday.
Who it is for: worth it if you hike in the Low Beskids and want to see familiar places without colour, and for anyone heading to 艁osie anyway. As the only reason for a long trip it is a gamble, because the museum says nothing about the size of the show. A sensible day is the homestead in the morning and Gorlice in the afternoon, where the permanent display “Axentowicz. The Artist’s Legacy” at 4 Pi艂sudskiego Street is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00-16:30.
English on site: the museum states nothing about English captions or English-language tours. The branch page carries an English box with hours and prices only.
